Breast Revision
in Houston, TX
Breast augmentation surgery helps women achieve beautiful, feminine curves every year. However, even the most qualified surgeon cannot prevent the need for a breast revision. Implant complications may arise, or a patient may simply change her aesthetic preference or her desire to have implants at all.
Dr. Edgar Bedolla uses the most advanced surgical breast rejuvenation techniques to help his patients fine-tune their breast enhancement and achieve their desired aesthetic.
What Is a Breast Revision?
Breast revision is a plastic surgery procedure designed to revise a previous breast augmentation. Patients often seek breast revision surgery because they have had a change in aesthetic preferences, are experiencing a complication, or because they simply want new implants.
Breast Revision Benefits
Breast revision surgery has high satisfaction rates due to its myriad benefits. With this procedure, patients can:
- Improve the appearance of their breasts
- Increase their breast comfort
- Get bigger or smaller implants
- Change the shape or material of their implants
- Address breast implant complications
- Remove their implants
Am I a Candidate for Breast Revision Surgery?
If you are experiencing implant complications or are dissatisfied with the size, shape, or appearance of your implants, you may be a candidate for breast revision surgery.
There are several reasons why patients seek breast revision surgery. These include:
- Bottoming out (the breast implant descends below the breast crease)
- Capsular contracture (excessive hardening of the natural scar tissue surrounding the breast implant)
- Implant rupture
- Implant malposition (the implants rotate, slip out of place, or create a double bubble deformity)
- Symmastia (when the implants are too close to the chest midline and merge at the cleavage)
- Physical ability (to increase mobility or enhance athletic performance)
- Implant size change
- Implant material change
Good candidates for breast revision surgery are nonsmokers with good overall health and realistic expectations for surgery.

What Are My Options for Breast Revision Surgery?
Breast implant revision surgery is an outpatient procedure typically performed under general anesthesia. Incisions can be made in the same area as your primary breast augmentation, depending on your surgical plan.
There are several approaches to the breast revision procedure, depending on the patient’s needs and reasons for seeking a breast revision. Dr. Bedolla will determine which method will best accomplish your goals.
- Implant Removal: The most straightforward option for breast revision is to remove your implants, with or without combination procedures like a breast lift.
- Implant Replacement: A common choice for breast revision is to remove old implants and replace them with new ones. This procedure also allows patients to change the type of implant they have, including its size, shape (e.g., round or teardrop), or material (e.g., saline, silicone, or gummy bear).
- Implant Exchange with Lift: For the ultimate breast rejuvenation, some patients opt for a breast lift in addition to their implant replacement.
- Implant Adjustment: The placement of your implants can be changed from subglandular to submuscular or vice versa.
- Capsulectomy: This technique removes both the implant and the capsule (natural scar tissue) that forms around it. It can address complications like capsular contracture, implant rupture, or breast implant illness (BII). The implants can be replaced, or a breast lift can be performed.
- Capsulorrhaphy: This procedure is used to adjust the capsule around the implant. It can also reposition the implant to reduce perceptibility, asymmetry, malposition, displacement, symmastia, and more.
What Procedures Can Be Combined With Breast Revision Surgery?
Breast revision surgery can be combined with other aesthetic surgery procedures to consolidate recovery times and provide a more transformative result. At your consultation, you and Dr. Bedolla can explore your aesthetic goals, determine what procedures can accomplish them, and discuss whether those procedures can be combined.
Breast Lift
Many patients choose to combine breast implant exchange with a breast lift (mastopexy). A breast lift can reshape the breast tissue, correct sagging skin and drooping breasts, and reposition the nipple and areola. At the same time, implant exchange can resolve complications and adjust implant aesthetics—size, shape, and material—to the patient’s preference. This provides comprehensive results and youthful, elevated breasts with improved comfort and enhanced aesthetics.
What Is Breast Revision Recovery Like?
Breast revision recovery is usually similar to recovery from your initial breast augmentation. You may emerge from surgery wearing surgical dressings or a support bra. You may have drains placed to collect excess fluid.
Many patients can return to work after a week or two, depending on the physical demands of their job. It is of utmost importance to rest and avoid vigorous activity during the first few weeks of recovery.
Dr. Bedolla will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, including information on medication, incision care, and activity restrictions. Follow these instructions carefully for the best results.
What Results Can I Expect From a Breast Revision?
At first, swelling tends to obscure the final results of a breast revision. After about six weeks, the swelling should resolve, and the breasts will soften and feel more natural.
If your breast revision was performed to address implant complications, you should feel relieved of your symptoms (such as pain from capsular contracture) immediately. As your recovery progresses, you can expect to feel better and better.
It can take six months to a year for your breasts to normalize and settle into their final position. Scars take several months to heal and begin to fade. However, with proper care, they should fade significantly within a year or two.
How Much Does a Breast Revision Cost?
The cost of a breast revision varies greatly, depending on the selected surgical method as well as facility, surgical, and anesthesia fees. At your consultation, Dr. Bedolla will create a personalized plan and provide you with more accurate pricing details.
