While each patient’s journey is unique, general timeframes can make tummy tuck recovery a little more predictable and help you monitor your healing progress. 

First 72 Hours

The first few days after surgery are the most uncomfortable. Patients tend to have limited mobility and require assistance from friends or family members to complete everyday tasks, including getting in and out of bed, cooking, and visiting the restroom.

You can expect to walk bent over for the first few weeks and maintain a slightly bent position when sleeping. Many patients sleep in a recliner for the first few weeks after a tummy tuck. 

Rest is crucial at this time, as is following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully—including specific instructions for medication, follow-up appointments, drain removal if needed, and use of compression garments.

Weeks One to Three

During this stage, you’ll have your second follow-up appointment with your plastic surgeon and may have your bandages removed. Early results will start to be noticeable, albeit still obscured by swelling.

Many patients return to work during this period unless their job is physically demanding. Light walking is encouraged and is the only exercise permitted at this time.

Months One to Three

Slight swelling at this stage is common among patients, as are moderate numbness and bruising. As the muscles and nerves continue to regenerate, sharp sensations may occur, but these are no cause for concern. Incisions will be healed but may be red or raised in appearance. 

Many patients can resume their daily routines four to eight weeks after surgery. Always follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding when you can return to more rigorous exercise and activities, like weight lifting.

One Year

One year after your surgery, your final results are visible, and the abdomen is fully healed. Additionally, incision scars have faded significantly and are easy to hide.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Essentials

Be prepared for your tummy tuck recovery by making sure you have the following items on hand:

  • Compression Garments: Perhaps the most crucial item, compression garments minimize swelling, prevent fluid buildup, and aid in the formation of smoother contours.
  • Scar Gel or Silicone Strips: These can help keep the area hydrated and encourage lines to soften and fade. Check with your surgeon for their recommended scar care products.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Loose, soft clothing will make it easier to dress and undress and prevent friction on your incision site.
  • Recliner: For at least three weeks, you’ll have to sleep at an angle. Some patients choose to sleep in bed with plenty of pillows, while some find it more comfortable to sleep in a reclining chair. You can find medical electric recliners for rent if you do not already have one.
  • Raised Toilet Seat: Squatting after surgery can be a challenge, especially if you’re well-hydrated and need frequent bathroom visits. A raised toilet seat or toilet seat booster can make a tremendous difference in your comfort and experience.

There are several actionable steps you can take to fortify your body during recovery:

  • Get Plenty of Rest: Perhaps the most important recovery tip is to rest as much as possible. Sleep is when your body repairs itself most effectively. Avoiding strenuous activity and easing into exercise with your surgeon’s approval will ensure optimal healing.
  • Eat a Balanced Diet: Nutrient-packed whole foods are essential for helping your body repair tissue, regenerate nerves and muscles, and fight infection. Avoid fast food, fried food, sugary food, and other unhealthy choices that can slow down your recovery—at least for now!
  • Stay Hydrated: Water helps your body flush out toxins, deliver nutrients to cells, move oxygen, reduce inflammation, and so much more. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. Avoid dehydrating and unhealthy beverages such as coffee, alcohol, and soda. 
  • Take Light Walks: While you should avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting, gentle walks will help promote circulation and prevent blood clots. Start with short walks around your room until you’re comfortable with slightly longer walks around the house or outdoors.
